South Africa bank three golds at African States
South Africa displayed their dominance at the 2024 African States Tournament by securing three gold medals in Botswana.
Wayne Roberts defended his Men’s Singles title to headline the gold medal haul in the early action at the tournament.
Roberts enjoyed a perfect tournament winning all four of his matches as he wrapped up the Singles discipline with a 21-13 win over Botswana. In the end, he ended with a +31 shot difference as he stamped his class over the field.
Matching Roberts’ perfect record was the Ladies Pairs side of Anneke Scheepers and Dezi Rosenblatt. In a tightly contested section, they secured two one-shot wins (Namibia and Zimbabwe) to make sure they couldn’t be caught at the top of the log.
Scheepers and Rosenblatt ended their campaign with a 20-15 victory over the host nation to ensure their gold medal.
The Ladies’ Triples banked gold of their own after ending the tournament with 3 wins and a draw.
Following opening wins over Namibia and Kenya, the triples side (Esme Kruger (Skip), Marizelle Rousseau and Thabelo Muvhango) drew with Zimbabwe 18-18 before romping to a 21-11 win in their final game.
The Men’s Fours didn’t secure a medal after two close last-bowl losses during the group stages.
The remaining disciplines begin their play on Wednesday.
