Shaun Thomas is ready to make his inclusion in the South African side count as he prepares for the African States Tournament in Botswana next month.

10 July 2024. A date he won’t forget.

Sure, for a player who lives the game and knows more facts and stats than most, there are a few dates that stick out. But the 10/07/24 will go down as a favourite … it is after all when he received the news of his call up to the men’s team to play in the African States Tournament.

A dream realised.

For many years, he’d aspired to this. To reach the pinnacle of a player in the sport. To don the Green Blazer.

For Thomas, this achievement is the culmination of years of dedication, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his sport.

"Having received the good news that I have been included in the Proteas Team to go and represent SA Bowls in Botswana in September is truly a dream come true," says Thomas.

"The call up. It means the world to me … the hard yards paid off. That means something. And it’s also a good message to all the youngsters coming through … aspire to something and keep chasing the dream. Don’t stop because it can happen to you.”

Thomas’ had for a long time mapped out the journey to this very point. It was a road that has been marked with a series of strategic goals and milestones, each one bringing him closer to his ultimate aspiration: representing his country on the international stage.

"I set this ultimate goal, the pinnacle for any player, in any sport, to represent their code in an International World Bowls recognised event a while back," he explained.

"Recently, the stars have been aligning - by firstly winning the National singles in '22 and then being called up to the Gold Squad."

His path has been a testament to the power of perseverance and setting clear, measurable goals.

Over the years, Thomas has consistently worked towards these objectives, steadily building his reputation and honing his skills. "This is not the end, but rather the beginning," he reflected, acknowledging that while he's reached a significant milestone, there's still much more for him to chase and achieve.

The upcoming tournament in Botswana holds special significance for Shaun, as it coincides with his birthday. "It is my birthday during the upcoming event (what a present)," he noted with excitement, but he remains grounded and focused on the challenges ahead.

"We can take nothing for granted and must maintain and keep focus."

Shaun's recent success has been key in his inclusion - he has one of the most impressive records in the district and in fact, the country given his success at Nationals.

However, he remains mindful of the ever-changing nature of sports.

"I have been consistent for several seasons now - but know this can change quickly, and need to remain focused and humble," he emphasized.

Looking ahead, Thomas is committed to continuing his passion for the sport, both on and off the green, without placing undue pressure on himself. His immediate goals include securing another National Singles title and competing in the Champion of Champions event in Australia and ultimately, trying to retain his place for future international tournaments.

Shaun Thomas's journey is a powerful reminder that with determination, clear goals, and a passion for your craft, dreams can indeed become reality. As he prepares to make his debut for the South African bowls team, he embodies the spirit of perseverance and excellence that inspires aspiring athletes everywhere.
