White vs Benguric showdown at Bedfordview

The reigning BSA Men’s Open singles champion Paul White will take on the 2021 champion Niksa Benguric at Bedfordview Country Club on Thursday morning.

Any spectators heading through to Bedfordview Country Club for the first match of the day are in for a treat following the sectional play of the singles.

The draw has put forth a number of a great matches throughout the host district but there’s certainly going to extra attention on the match of White against Benguric.

Benguric has been one of the leading players in the country following wins at the Nationals as well as the BSA Masters last year.

He is a steadfast character, who has been able to hone in at the right time with an excellent drawing game.

White, as you will recall, enjoyed one of the best runs to win the national title last year in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The talented bowler - not yet 30 - beat a trio of Proteas in Gerry Baker, Nic Rusling and then Jason Evans, SA’s number one, to win gold. It’s safe to say that his singles’ skills are up there with the best. White’s style is to play all the shots in his arsenal as he often leaves it all on the line.

“It’s. going to be a great game against Niksa,” said White after winning his section.

“I know what I’m in for - his record is excellent and really does all the talking for him. But I’m going to do my utmost to win this match. It’s such a tough competition and there’s always these kinds of matches along the way … you have to beat the best at some point if you are going to go all the way.

“The greens at Bedfordview are great - especially when it gets into the afternoon. Playing the first game of the day against Niksa will be tough.”

There’s a good chance this contest will extend far beyond 21 ends but a fast start may be what it takes to edge it. It’s going to be a fascinating match to decide who advances.
