South Africa’s top duo receive rankings boost

Wayne Roberts and Anneke Scheepers have been given a big rankings boost in the latest World Bowls Series ranking.

Roberts, fresh off his victory at the African States Tournament in the Singles and Pairs, has risen to fourth in the world with 674 points.

“I’m very happy with the news … obviously, I know that we don’t have all that many events to play to earn points so winning two golds in Botswana was key. I’m pleasantly surprised that I’ve shot up to fourth.

“The World Champion of Champions is next and I guess, there’s both a lot of pressure and none at all. It’s such a strong field, so maybe I can fly under the radar a bit but then again, if I get some good results I can keep myself in the top 12.”

The attraction of a top 12 spot looms large for both Roberts and Scheepers as the World Masters in 2025 will invite the top dozen men and women in the rankings at the end of the 2024.

“I’m very happy,” said Scheepers.

“There was a bit of work to get my points sorted out - under my maiden name and now my married name. But it’s all worked out in the end.

“The World Champion of Champions is a great opportunity for both Wayne and myself. It won’t be easy … and then of course, other players will be earning points in other events. But I’ll keep my head down and continue to do my best and train well and take each match as it comes.”

Scheepers is SA’s best at 15th in the world which means a good showing in Auckland later in the year is a must if she wants to book a place in the top 12.

The current SA National Singles champion is just ahead of her AST pairs partner Dezi Rosenblatt, who sits in 17th with national teammate Esme Kruger in 18th.

Thabelo Muvhango is 24th with Marizelle Rousseau in 41st position

Niksa Benguric is 27th with Shaun Thomas in 28th and CP Mathewson in 37th and reigning SA Masters champion Jason Evans in 45th.
