Scheepers seals golden day at Durbanville
Anneke Scheepers sealed another major title when she won the Open Singles at the 2024 BSA Women’s Nationals in Cape Town on Saturday.
Scheepers has been at the top of the game for some time but with her performance this week only further enhanced her reputation.
A quarter-final defeat in the pairs left Scheepers honing in on gold in the singles. She admitted a sense of relief after her final victory against a stalwart of the game in Sylvia Burns.
“It was a long week. Lots of bowls but I managed to keep my head down and my concentration was important in going the distance,” said Scheepers.
She managed a 21-14 win over Burns to add to her growing CV and elevate her status as SA’s leading player.
On playing against Burns, she said: “I spent a lot of time thinking about it. Sylvia was there in the front rank when I made debut for South Africa. It was something special and I have a lot of respect for her.”
Sandy Smart was crowned Veteran Singles winner in an all Eastern Province derby as she beat El-Mare Le Gras 21-7 on Saturday.
Le Gras won bronze in the women’s fours after losing to Tracy Meyeridricks and her team representing Henley on Klip.
Meyeridricks’ quartet won their semi final 21-16 before cruising to the gold medal in some fine style.
They managed to brush aside Esme Kruger and her Hartenbos foursome in a one-sided 25-3 final victory.
Heather Pembroke and Protea front-rank Thabelo Muvhango managed to put aside their disappointment in losing their fours semi-final but going on to win gold medal in the pairs.
It was a tightly fought contest as they added to Kruger’s silver medal tally.
In the end, Pembroke beat Kruger 14-13 in the closest match of the day.
