Malobolo, Neluonde set the pace at Nationals

The combination of Wilson Malobolo and Prince Neluonde have moved into the semi-finals of the pairs at the Bowls South Africa Men’s Nationals in Johannesburg.

On another flawless day at Bedfordview Country Club where spectators flocked to the greens and were duly impressed, one combination seems to have emerged as frontrunners.

While Neluonde is well known for his leading skills and as a decorated Protea - he is a Commonwealth Games gold medallist -, Malobolo in his own right has played himself into the frame as one of the leading bowlers in the country over the past few seasons.

The pair won two from two on Friday to move into the last four where they wait to face with Cecil Bornman/Driaan van Niekerk or Stoffel Lamprechts/Charles Stassen. The latter came from the death to beat the defending champions in the last match of the day.

“We are always ready for the challenge,” says Malobolo.

“It’s a good combination and of course, with Prince leading I’m hardly ever in deep trouble. He played really well today and I was able to contribute where needed.”

The pair will be tough to stop especially given their understanding.

Neluonde adds: “Wilson is a top, top player. He has all the shots in the game and it’s just about making the right decisions - when to attack, when to protect. We know it’s going to be tough but we have a good relationship and we want to succeed.”

In the bottom half of the draw, the in-form Warren Steyn is into the last four with Linden skip Otto Holicki. They meet Barry Minopetros, and Robbie Robertson (Beaconsfield Park) for the opportunity to play for the gold medal.

Steyn will be working hard to make history at this year’s event as he is the only player left in all three disciplines.
