All to play for as Fours action heats up

Jeppe scored an eight during the first day of the Fours.

There is plenty to play for on Tuesday at the BSA Men’s Nationals as sectional play of the Fours event draws to a close.

It was a mixed bag on the greens around Gauteng with several “big name” teams unable to make perfect starts to the discipline.

It has left many of the 26 sections open for interpretation as to who might progress into the next phase.

Defending champions Hillary (Wayne Roberts) found the going tough as they won just a single match of their opening three. In that section, it is Andy Selby (Krugersdorp) who is on top with a perfect day.

It goes to show how difficult it can be with such good depth on display across this large field of players from around the country.

A section to keep an eye on will be Section 15 where Wynand Pool skips the Correctional Services side. They maintained a 100% start on day one but will have three sides looking to hunt them down.

At this stage, it’s probably wise to keep a pragmatic view to what lies ahead.

Just ask Proteas legend Neil Burkett.

“We made a perfect start, which was nice because we are a side made up of three different provinces,” said Burkett, who is still eyeing major silverware late into his career on the greens.

“There’s a long way to go. To just qualify, so we aren’t doing any other thinking other than taking it end by end.”

It will be a thrilling conclusion to the fours sections on Tuesday as the best battle the best.
