It was a steep learning curve for the South African U25 pair at the 2023 IIBC World Junior Championships at East Kilbride Indoor Bowling Club.

Few would argue against the statement the future of bowls in South Africa is bright. The game has seen an uptake in the junior divisions across the country and the top talent is producing high quality bowls in major competitions.

Emma Murphy and Kholwani Khanyile are amongst the next generation stars proving themselves at the highest level.

Both have won a number of medals in top competitions.

During the 2023 IIBC World Junior Championships, they were tested against the best from around the world.

In singles play, both managed to earn a single win before the mixed pairs event.

It was there that they proved that two is better than one as they combined to move out of the group stages. They qualified for the quarter-finals along with the Welsh side.

However, the young South Africans ran in to the form side of the competition and were beaten by Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill, who won the singles title to make it a double golden week, and Ryan McElroy.

The men’s U25 singles was won by Australian young gun Nathan Black.

The next generation of stars in action in Scotland.
