Fast start at 2024 BSA Women’s Nationals

The Bowls South Africa Women’s Nationals got off to a fast start despite some misty conditions in Cape Town.

The pairs was the event that got the championships underway and over the course of the first few days the field has been whittled down to the last 16.

Given the stakes at play - winning any format in the national championships is the gold standard in the game - it is perhaps unsurprising to see a host of Proteas still in the mix.

Anneke Scheepers, the Fours skip of the South African side, booked her place in the knockouts playing alongside Goodwood clubmate Megan Ferreira. The pair will be up against a CBCOB combination featuring Ina Fourie, a recent winner of the national open singles.

Esme Kruger, who often plays third for Scheepers in the national side, is also through to the last 16 with Lara York as her lead. They will face a blockbuster tussle against young star duo Gillian Young and Shannon Davies.

BSA Masters runner-up Dezi Rosenblatt and Desire Vermaak, playing out of The Woods in Port Elizabeth, are another pair to watch but they will be facing a hometown side from Durbanville.

It’s quite the week so far for Durbanville BC as they have five pairs sides into the last 16.

Not to miss out on the high-profile names advancing was Colleen Piketh, fresh off of her bronze in the BSA Masters. She has Petro Breedt as her teammate this week and they are through to face Helen Jansen and MC Meyer from Rustenburg.

The fours is currently being played as the week winds towards the last four and finals being played over the weekend.
